Flowers Flowers Flowers Flowers Flowers, is an artist's book written by Ash Kilmartin, typeset and printed earlier this summer at Frans Masereel Centrum.
In May/June this year Kilmartin spent some weeks as a resident at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, BE, where she was thrilled to spend a lot of one-on-one time with the Centrum's collection of lead type and letterpress. In her first days there she also encountered Dorothy Iannone's A Cookbook (1969/2019).
Iannone's voice(s) in this book spoke to certain questions she had packed to take with me to the FMC residency: what to do with a hunger for life? How to share an appetite for the small beauties that appear after loss? How to keep some for later? The cookbook kept her company, when she'd left my own hand-written book of recipes back home. So did reflections on the processes of writing and printing themselves; and so did her fellow residents and the brilliant staff and the hens of the FMC, who all had an influence on the end result.
So, a moment to share the book and all the warm feelings that enshroud it! With Kate Briggs in conversation, and she'll be serving some dishes departing from Dorothy's recipes that she's adapted to her own taste. Of course, there will be flowers.
The book:
